I had an issue setting up Magisk and saw the error message about being unable to parse the package and this is how I fixed it.

So yesterday I was fixing the LineageOS 19 install for my POCO F2 Pro and came across an issue with Magisk. After installing the ROM and the Gapps package, I booted into Android and set everything up. I then rebooted back into Recovery Mode so I could flash Magisk and then booted right back into the custom ROM.

So anytime we flash Magisk through Recovery Mode, we need to go into the OS and then open Magisk so it can complete the installation. This usually involves opening the app, letting it update the binaries and then rebooting the phone so Magisk can complete the root process.

However, when I opened up the Magisk app for the first time I was greeted with an error saying “There was a problem parsing the package.” The installation for Magisk was unable to be completed due to this error about parsing the package.

I was at a loss because it’s not something that I have seen before and after doing some research about the issue, I was only told that I should try to “unhide Magisk Manager” as that could be what is causing the issue.

And that tip may help you if you ever come across this issue. . .but it’s not something I had done since I was just trying to get Magisk installed (so I couldn’t have hidden anything).

After doing some tinkering, though, I found out that I was able to fix this issue by uninstalling the Magisk app stub that was showing up in the App Drawer. It hadn’t received the full Magisk app icon that we’re used to seeing. But it was selectable and it was able to be uninstalled.

I then proceeded to install the Magisk app from the GitHub page and it seemed to solve the parsing error that I had received before. Magisk was then able to complete the initial install process, which requires a reboot after setting everything up.

And with that reboot done, I was then able to use Magisk like you would expect and I no longer saw that error telling me that “there was a problem parsing the package.”

So while I have still not been able to figure out exactly what was so different with this Magisk install compared to the others I’ve done, but I do hope these suggestions can help those who come across the same issue I did.
