I have the Google Pixel 6 right here and in today’s video I’ll be showing you how to de-google the phone by installing a secure custom ROM called CalyxOS.

For those who are not familiar with the idea, de-googling a smartphone or tablet results in there no longer being any Google applications or services installed on the device. The company has its components so tied to the original firmware we have running on it that this is only possible by installing a custom ROM on the device.

There are a number of ways we can de-google the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, though, but we’ll be using the custom ROM CalyxOS in today’s example.

Calyx OS is custom ROM that promises to help you reclaim your privacy.

Not only is the ROM focused on privacy and security, but it will also provide proactive security recommendations as well as automatic updates so you don’t have to worry about it as often.

CalyxOS only officially supports a limited number of devices right now, with the Google Pixel smartphones highlighted on the website here. While the custom ROM doesn’t come with a lot of pre-installed applications, it does give you the option to install some security and privacy focused options when you first boot up the OS.

They advertise apps and services like Signal, the Tor Browser, VPNs from CalyxOS themselves as well as Riseup, and offer a way to install some popular 3rd-party applications via the Aurora Store and F-Droid.

CalyxOS also includes some additional security and privacy features like a build-in firewall called Datura Firewall, the option to choose Cloudflare DNS as your private DNS provider, and other useful features like WiFi/Bluetooth timeout features, Verified Boot so you the bootloader can be locked with the ROM, and a way to block unknown USB Devices.

There are a lot of feature here here that I recommend you checking out on their website right now if you’re interested in trying a custom ROM for Android that is void of Google applications and services.

To install this ROM, we need to have an unlockable bootloader. The bootloader itself doesn’t have to be unlocked to begin the installation process, but it does need to be unlockable through traditional methods. When you’re ready to begin the install we first need to enable USB Debugging Mode on our phone.

Then we need to download both the “device-flasher” as well as the ROM that matches the smartphone you currently have.

So in my instance, I just need to download the installer from the website as well as the CalyxOS firmware for the regular Google Pixel 6. These files are put into the same folder on the PC and then can launch the installer after connecting the phone to the PC with a USB cable.

So now that you have CalyxOS installed, and we have opted to not in stall MicroG, we have successfully de-googled the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro using this privacy and security focused ROM.
