You likely already know that Fastboot Mode isn’t available on Samsung Galaxy devices. This means that we’re unable to use Fastboot.exe commands and instead are forced into using a different program called Odin.

However, Odin isn’t available for macOS and Linux so this is where Heimdall comes into play.

Heimdall can essentially be looked at as a replacement for the Fastboot.exe file. Since we can’t use Fastboot on Samsung devices, Heimdall can be used as a text-based replacement for those who do not want to use Odin.

So download the Windows version (all versions linked below) and extract it so you can follow along with this video.

We start by checking to see if the Heimdall program can even run in the first place (by using the heimdall version command). If you get the version number then it can be executed properly. If not, then you likely need to install the Microsoft Visual Studio (linked below) support files.

Now we boot our Samsung Galaxy device into Download Mode and connect it to the PC using a USB cable.

Windows users will likely need to use the zadig program to install the proper drivers as Heimdall has issues connecting without them. But you can try the print-pit command before just to verify (as I did).

After zadig installs the drivers for you, try the print-pit command again and see if heimdall is able to establish a connection to your Samsung Galaxy smartphone or tablet.

If it spits out a bunch of text and reboots the device then you’re good to go and Heimdall has been set up successfully. But if you get an error, then you can try another USB port, or another USB cable, or just reboot into Download Mode to try it again (it has worked for me before).
