How to Temporarily Boot a Custom Recovery with Fastboot?

You don’t have to flash TWRP in order to use its amazing features. Instead, we can temporarily boot a custom recovery IMG file using the Fastboot command.

When looking through the Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 XDA forums I noticed an early alpha build of TWRP was available. The downside to this early build is that it doesn’t work properly when flashed using traditional methods.

So I thought it would make a good idea for a video (one I’ve been planning to do for a while now) since it’s how I’ve been using TWRP for years now.

Over the years there’s been a battle (of sorts) with the boot partition. Both Magisk and TWRP need to modify this partition but each one has to work in tweaks that account for the other (and instances when the user doesn’t have either).

This has also messed with how OTA updates are installed on devices that use the A/B partition system.

So for a while, it’s just been easier to leave the stock recovery intact and just have Magisk installed. This allows me to temporarily boot a custom recovery (TWRP in this instance) to make use of those features while leaving the recovery that’s installed the way it was.

We do this by booting the smartphone or tablet into Fastboot Mode. I typically do this using the hardware button combination (that can be different depending on the device) but you can also enable USB Debugging Mode and execute the adb reboot bootloader command too (bootloader is interchangeable with fastboot in this instance).

Whatever method you go with, boot your phone into Fastboot Mode and then execute the Fastboot boot command that I show you in the video. As long as you’re executing a ‘fastboot flashing’ or ‘fastboot flash’ type command (we’re using fastboot boot here), then it’s only temporary.
