Google has been putting a lot of focus into widgets with the release of Android 12 and we’re seeing these make their way to older versions as well.
As long as you are on version 2.21.417.3.90 of Google Drive (or later) then you should have the option to add a new widget to your home screen. This seems to have been added via a server-side switch since that version of the app has been available for a while.
But the new widget first appeared on Android 12 devices before making an appearance on Android 11 as well.
So if you are on Android 11 or later, and also have the latest version of Google Drive installed then you should have a new widget to choose from.
The new widget is labeled Suggested Files and it offers a list of what Google thinks you may want to open up next. This could be from your most recently uploaded files or just something that Google knows you tend to open around the same time and/or day.
The widget also includes a search box that when tapped, will open up the Google Drive application directly to the search page. It will even expand the keyboard for you as well.
Lastly, there’s an upload button next to that search box within the new Google Drive widget. This button will bring up the file explorer page so you can upload a file to your account.
